My Wonderful Family

  • The teaching of medicine has been a professional goal of mine since my college days at Bucknell University. After a solid medical education at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, and diverse training in the Family Practice Residency Program in Lancaster, PA, I set off for private practice. My goal was to experience the "real life" practice environment prior to starting a teaching career.

My journey took me to rural North Carolina where I joined an experienced family physician in private practice. The fulfillment of providing quality and comprehensive medical care in a rural area was tremendous. We used all the tools of our trade on a daily basis, and we were frequently required to produce new tools to meet the needs of our patient population. While building a busy private practice, I was presented with a new challenge ... running a successful business. I greatly enjoyed the "business side" of medicine. I found that my roles as a businessman and a physician could be aligned in a way to promote the overall quality of patient care.

After several years of stretching our Northeast roots, my family and I decided to move back to the Philadelphia area. I knew that most private practices would eventually align with a "big brother" so I took the opportunity to join one of the first established primary care networks in the region, the Crozer Health . As the System rapidly grew and managed care penetration increased, I became more involved in the System's management. I greatly enjoy working at a "system level" in educating the businessmen and the general public about the value and worth of family practice.

The most recent leg of my journey has brought me to the Crozer Health Family Practice Residency Program. I feel honored to be a part of such a dynamic, progressive program and know that I now have the "tools" to effectively teach the trade of family practice. My professional interests include medical management, practice management, medical student teaching, sports medicine, and preventive medicine. I have found that the combination of an open-minded faculty, high-quality residents, a devoted staff, and the state-of-the-art Medical Informatics System has been the ingredients of success and will keep our residency program on the cutting edge into the twenty-first century.

My personal life can be summed up in one word ... FAMILY. My wife, Jennifer, and I are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Emily (born 3/90) and Kacy (born 3/92). I strive to play a huge part in my girls' lives (though putting on nail polish is still difficult!), and I am proud to say that my family is the most important thing in my life. At home, I am often found in my organic vegetable garden, attending to our perennials and herbs, jogging, or throwing verbal assaults at my computer. Please feel free to visit us during harvest season and you won't leave empty-handed.

  • As a physician, I feel that one of my primary responsibilities is to be a patient educator. Using terminology that is appropriate to each patient’s needs is one of the ways by which I can achieve this goal. I also try to encourage patients to become self-educated about their health, illnesses and medical conditions. Building a long-term patient-doctor relationship is of the utmost importance to me. By carefully listening to the needs, questions and concerns of my patients, I hope to inspire trust, confidence and a good rapport.

One of my main focuses is the role of preventive medicine to achieve wellness. I often work with other specialists in order to improve the overall care and health of my patients and to keep them on the road to optimum health. I emphasize the importance of exercise for getting and staying fit, and I share personal anecdotes to inspire and encourage them. Specifically, I tell patients of my avid participation in tennis and running, not to mention caring for my three children and staffing their school health office. I am particularly interested in women’s health and pediatrics.

  • Mark was born and raised in Connecticut, and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Connecticut. He went on to complete his Master of Science in Counseling and Clinical Health Psychology and Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). Mark completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Beck Community Initiative, where he trained therapists and other mental health providers throughout the greater Philadelphia area in evidence-based treatment practices.

During his time in graduate school, Mark developed a strong passion for patient-centered, team-based approaches to care that focus on treating the whole person. His training at PCOM provided him with the unique opportunity to learn alongside students who were pursuing degrees in other healthcare disciplines, and this, alongside innumerable other experiences learning and practicing in integrated healthcare environments, fostered a desire to pursue a career in a primary care environment that emphasized team-based, whole person care. Mark was fortunate to train at the Center for Family Health during his fourth year of graduate doctoral training, and his positive experience with this site led him to pursue his current position.

Beyond his clinical work in psychology and behavioral sciences, Mark enjoys teaching in the Masters in Counseling program at the PCOM. He also is passionate about physical fitness and nutrition, often using his free time to engage in some form of physical activity; namely competing in road and mud races, climbing, biking, weight training, and yoga. He also indulges in cooking and music-related activities, relying on both as two of his most necessary self-care practices. Beyond his personal interests, Mark loves to spend time with friends and family, preferring to travel as much as possible!

  • I chose to practice Family Medicine because of the vast range of patients and medical problems we can take care of.  There is always something new to learn every single day. Within the realm of family medicine, I really enjoy Women’s Health and Obstetrics. I graduated from Crozer Family Medicine Residency and stayed on as faculty. It has been a great and rewarding experience thus far working with fellow faculty, residents, and staff. On a more personal level, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, going boating on the Chesapeake Bay, cooking at home, and being a foodie at all of the great Philadelphia restaurants.
