Program Overview

Crozer's Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency is a four-year program that accepts three residents per training year. Our faculty provides a top-notch, comprehensive residency experience that prepares residents to start their careers in specialty and subspecialty training. The program combines the clinical challenges and state-of-the-art technology of a busy tertiary-care medical center with a collegial, supportive environment to offer residents an excellent educational experience.

Our program is based at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, although residents rotate throughout Crozer Health and have access to area continuity clinics.

Academically, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Crozer is built around a core of board-certified obstetrics and gynecology subspecialists representing gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, female pelvic medicine, and reconstructive surgery, and pediatric and adolescent gynecology. All highly regarded in their respective fields, our subspecialists provide consultative services for several area hospitals, creating a rich patient referral network to enhance the resident experience. Notably, our hard-working faculty - who are clinicians and researchers in their own right - are actively involved in resident and medical student education.

Early on in the program, our residents are introduced to general obstetrics and gynecology as well as primary care. Progressively, residents are provided with extensive experience in gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, high-risk obstetrics, genetic testing and counseling, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Also included in their training: office hysteroscopy, operative endoscopy, and radical cancer surgery.

In all, Crozer’s Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Programs provide residents with a complete, satisfying, and stimulating experience.

  • The first year of residency gives new physicians an introduction to a wide range of clinical experiences. Residents increase their understanding of general obstetrics and gynecology, with four blocks of each specialty. This educational foundation is enhanced by broad-based clinical rotations in ultrasound, critical care, and family medicine.

  • Residents continue to expand their knowledge and experience during their second year of residency. In addition to increased responsibilities on the gynecology rotations, the second-year resident is in charge of Labor & Delivery as the night-float junior resident. Our residents spend a full month in a local ambulatory care center where residents provide primary care for a diverse patient population. Residents round out the year by spending one month in each of our sub-specialty divisions.  Early exposure to sub-specialties helps residents decide if they want to pursue these disciplines further through fellowship.

  • Third-year residents receive extensive exposure to the obstetrics and gynecology subspecialties during rotations in maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. During these rotations, our residents work directly with board-certified subspecialties and use the latest technologies to care for complicated obstetrics and gynecology patients. During the third year while on the gynecology service, residents develop increasingly complex surgical skills, including experience in laparoscopic and robotic procedures.

  • Fourth-year residents complete their education by dividing their time among obstetrics, gynecology, urogynecology, and gynecology oncology services.  Chief residents are afforded significant authority in conducting the clinical activities of their respective teams, including coordinating the care of all hospitalized clinic patients and working closely with the private attendings in the care of private patients. Residents gain valuable exposure to a full spectrum of gynecologic cancer treatment options, including radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

How to Apply

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which is administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The AAMC developed ERAS to transmit residency applications, letters of recommendation, dean's letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials from applicants and medical schools to residency directors using the Internet.
