Premature Ovarian Failure

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is the loss of normal ovarian function before the age of 40 and typically results in infertility. This condition differs from premature menopause in that POF patients do not produce estrogens or eggs in a regular fashion. Women with POF can have irregular cycles for years and may still achieve pregnancy. Risk factors include age and a family history of POF.

POF results from either:

  • Follicle depletion: which can be chromosomally related as in turners syndrome or due to toxins such a chemotherapeutic reagents
  • Follicle dysfunction: as the result of an autoimmune disease or unknown factors

To schedule a consultation to discuss the work-up, diagnosis and treatment of POF please call the office at 610-619-8300.
