What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a jarring brain injury that is caused by a bump or blow to the head that causes headache, dizziness or any of the symptoms listed below. You do not need to have a loss of consciousness to have a concussion. Even though the bump or blow may seem mild, a concussion can be a serious medical problem.

Signs of a Concussion

Seek medical help if you or someone you know has three or more of the following symptoms develop after a blow to the head:

• Anxiety
• Dizziness
• Confusion
• Concentration Problems
• Fatigue
• Irritability
• Memory Problems
• Blurred Vision
• Headache
• Mood Swings
• Depression
• Sleep Problems

Concussions in Sports

According to the Centers for Disease Control, emergency department visits for sports- and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, among children and adolescents increased by 60% during the past decade.
