Drexel University College of Medicine recently named Catherine Daniel, M.D., its 2018 recipient of the Dean’s Special Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching.

Daniel is a faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

A graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Daniel completed her residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She is a teaching hospitalist at Crozer-Ketsone.

Daniel says she was surprised to learn that she had been nominated for the award. “I get good feedback from my students but I didn’t know that they passed it on.” she says.

"I love my job because I have the opportunity not only to take care of patients but also to serve as an educator, training future doctors," Daniel continues. "Teaching is my favorite part of my work. It's so gratifying to watch medical students grow in clinical judgment and medical knowledge during our time together. I'm so proud of all they have accomplished this year and am grateful for this award."

Steven Higgins, M.D., Chief Academic Officer for the Crozer Health , validated the award.

“It was obvious from the get-go that she has a passion for teaching,” Higgins says. “I frequently see medical students huddled outside her office, arriving early for a teaching session. Students would all sit on the floor and Dr. Daniel would facilitate in-depth discussions. I could sense the sheer joy of learning and intellectual discourse.”

Daniel was presented the award at a dean’s luncheon, following the Drexel College of Medicine commencement, where Higgins served as a faculty marshal. Last year’s recipient of the award was Elise Hogan, M.D., also on the Crozer-Chester medical staff.
