Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
Developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognized around the world as the leading continuing education program for pre-hospital emergency trauma care. PHTLS' mission is to promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of pre-hospital care through education.
Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to improve the quality of trauma care in the surrounding area and decrease mortality.
The PHTLS course focuses on how to identify, manage, and transport trauma patients in the pre-hospital environment while using the highest level of care and giving the patient the greatest chance of survival.
Topics
Students will learn to do the following skills throughout the course:
- Identify the mechanism of injury
- Recognize life-threatening injuries
- Relate pathophysiology to injuries
- Assess and manage trauma patients
- Perform appropriate interventions

- Airway Management & Venitlation
- Assessment & Management
- Rapid Extrication
- Spinal Immobilization
- Pediatric Assessment
- Pediatric Immobilization
- Evaluation Scenarios
Length of Course
The PHTLS course is a 16-hour class that is offered over 2 days.
Cost
The cost of the PHTLS course is $225.
