It’s Your Brain. It’s Personal.

Health care has changed. It has become a system of specialists, each with a narrow focus. But that doesn’t work for us. We believe that you deserve more. That’s why we specialize in patient care, not health care.  We see you as a complete person, and we become your devoted advocate. Our team of neurosurgeons, neurologists and researchers are inventing treatment, restoring patient confidence and saving lives. No compromise. Just thinking of you.

Conditions We Treat

  • A rare noncancerous tumor that presses on the hearing and balance nerves in the inner ear.

  • A progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. It is the most common cause of dementia.

  • Arteries and veins that have formed incorrectly and are unusually tangled. This usually happens during development before birth or shortly after.

  • Balance and dizziness conditions can have several causes, including vestibular (balance system) problems, neurologic disease, and cardiac disease.

  • Severe shock or damage to the nervous system.

  • A bulging, weakened area in the wall of an artery in the brain, resulting in an abnormal ballooning of the artery that is at risk for rupturing.

  • A collection of cells that grow out of control, ultimately forming a mass in the brain, pituitary gland or spine.

  • A narrowing of the main blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen to the brain.

  • A problem in which a part of the brain at the back of the skull bulges through a normal opening in the skull where it joins the spinal canal.

  • A problem that causes impairment or decline of memory, motor skills, learning or other mental function.

  • A jarring brain injury that is caused by a bump or blow to the head that causes headache, dizziness and confusion, among other symptoms.

  • A condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent seizures.

  • The vertebrae in your spine are separated by spongy discs. A herniated disc occurs when the disc is compressed and/or breaks down, causing the inner nucleus to rupture.

  • A disease that causes a disruption in the communication between your brain and the rest of your body, resulting in problems with vision, balance, muscle control and other basic body functions.

  • A buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.

  • Spinal cord stimulation is a way to manage various types of pain by implanting a device that sends low levels of electricity directly into the spinal cord.

  • A disease characterized by tremor, usually when at rest, decreased spontaneous movements, slowness of movement, gait difficulty, and rigidity.

  • Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal narrows and pinches the nerves.

  • Spondylosis occurs when the discs between your vertebrae become compressed.

  • The loss or alteration of bodily function that results from an insufficient supply of blood to the brain.

  • A type of nerve pain that affects the face, usually on one side of the jaw or cheek.

Diagnostic Testing

Evaluating and diagnosing conditions affecting the brain, spine and nervous system is complicated and complex. We use the following tests to accurately diagnose each patient’s condition and build the best care plan possible.

  • A noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce horizontal, or axial, images (often called slices) of the body.

  • A special kind of CT exam that focuses particularly on the blood vessels, using a contrast material to make them show up clearly in the images. CTA is used to examine blood vessels in areas including the brain and neck.

  • A form of CT that provides detailed information about blood flow to the brain. CTP is fast, painless, noninvasive and accurate.

  • Detects abnormalities in the brain waves or electrical activity of the brain.

  • Measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. The test is used to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities.

  • A radiation-free, usually non-invasive way to produce high-quality pictures inside the body from multiple planes.

  • A specific type of MRI designed specifically to examine the body’s blood vessels.

  • An excellent non-invasive method of diagnosing a condition called cerebral venous thrombosis. MRV can demonstrate absent flow in the right transverse sinus, sigmoid sinus, and internal jugular vein.

  • A powerful imaging technique that provides a more complete picture and makes it easier for your doctor to diagnose problems, determine the extent of disease, prescribe treatment, and track progress.

Specialty Clinics

  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) Clinic: This unique clinic includes specialists in neurosurgery, cognitive neurologists, and specially trained physical therapists who diagnose, evaluate and treat this common neurological problem. NPH is very often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s disease or other conditions. NPH can be quickly and successfully treated once properly assessed by our team.
  • Chiari Malformation Center of Excellence: Our dedicated team leads the field in diagnosis, surgical treatment – when appropriate, and lifelong treatment of this disease. Recognized nationally, we receive referrals for our unique set of skills focused on the treatment and care of each individual patient.
  • Balance Clinic: A clinic focused on individually addressing patients with balance issues and providing customized solutions enabling them to lead safer, more productive lives.

Programs and Services

Neurosurgery OR Suite with Biplane Imaging Technology

Our neurosurgeons perform lifesaving minimally invasive endovascular procedures in a hybrid operating room located at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa. A revolutionary alternative to conventional operating rooms, the hybrid OR enables our team to treat high-risk patients who need immediate surgical intervention. It is equipped with a biplane advanced imaging system that delivers detailed, high-quality 3D X-ray images during the surgical procedure.

Together, the hybrid OR and biplane technology are used to treat conditions such as stroke, aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, and brain tumor. We are available 24/7 for emergency surgeries.

Emergency and Critical Care

Global Neurosciences Institute at Crozer offers the region’s first, and only, Neurologic Emergency Department (Neuro ED), located at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. The Neuro ED model was conceived and first implemented in the U.S. by GNI. Our fellowship-trained emergency room physicians focus on assessing and treating neurological disease patients who present to the ED. Our approach to dramatically expedite treatment time for patients with life-threatening conditions provides the best care possible for patients and their families.

Our Neurologic Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) at Crozer-Chester Medical Center provides dedicated care to patients with life-threatening neurological problems. It is a dedicated ICU model where all patients are managed exclusively by our team and clinical support.

Neurosurgery

Our neurosurgeons and vascular neurosurgeons offer a full range of conventional and minimally-invasive surgical treatment options. We also provide patients with novel surgical treatments not available elsewhere in the region aimed at improving their quality of life and enhancing their recovery process.

Neurology

Our physicians represent a diverse range of subspecialties including epilepsy, sleep disorders, Parkinson’s disease/movement disorders and Alzheimer’s disease/cognitive disorders, allowing us to serve the community with comprehensive neurological care. Our physicians also work collaboratively with other specialists, including our neurosurgeons, to provide the best possible patient care.

Concussion Management

Crozer Health offers specialized care from a team of experts trained in the detection and treatment of traumatic concussion. Not all concussions are the same, so you may receive treatment from experts in more than one specialty.

Epilepsy Monitoring

Our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), located at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, offers targeted, specialized therapy to patients suffering from epilepsy – both newly diagnosed and those requiring change-in-status monitoring. The inpatient unit allows physicians to collect information 24 hours a day on all activity – when the patient is awake, asleep and active.

Stroke Care

Crozer Health’s multidisciplinary stroke teams are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients who suffer stroke.

CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery

The CyberKnife Robotic System is a painless, nonsurgical outpatient cancer treatment with minimal to no side effects. CyberKnife uses a combination of image-guidance technology and computer-controlled robotics for extremely precise targeting to diagnose and treat brain tumors.
